SWIMMING IN THE OCEAN

Lifeguard Flags
Orange = lifeguard off duty
Yellow = lifeguard on duty; swim with caution
Red = no swimming (typically indicate riptides are strong and dangerous)
Blue = aquatic hazard

Tip: Lifeguard flags should be taken seriously. They are posted for your own safety and well-being. However, they are NOT suggestions. You will be forced out of the water when conditions are unsafe if you choose to go in the water anyway.

**If you choose to swim in the ocean at a time when lifeguards are off duty (or in an area of the beach that isn't supplied with lifeguards) and find yourself caught in a riptide, swim parallel to the beach until you are free of it and then swim to shore. NEVER attempt to swim against the riptide.

[Riptide: stretch of turbulent water, caused by the meeting of currents or abrupt changes in depth; a strong current, especially one flowing outwards from the shore, causing disturbance on the surface]

WEATHER

Climate
The climate in Myrtle Beach is considered sub-tropical--lots of sunshine and humidity. Temps are at their highest in the months of July and August and at their lowest in December and January.

Summer is hot and humid with daytime highs between 83-91°F and the ocean's average temperature is 80°F or higher.

Does it rain a lot in Myrtle Beach? Yes, it rains often during the summer months due to our hot and humid climate. However, most of the rainfall occurs during the late afternoon in the form of a brief thunderstorm. These storms usually seem to come out of nowhere and they're over just as quickly.

Winter is mild and short with daytime highs between 57-61°F and nighttime lows fall between 36-38°F. Temperatures tend to vary a lot more in the winter than they do in the summer, and snowfall is extremely rare in Myrtle Beach.

The seasons of spring and fall are mild and sunny... and, personally, my favorite time to live in Myrtle Beach. The temps are usually warm enough to enjoy (a MUCH less crowded) beach without being TOO hot and humid.

When is peak season? Late April (plus a few weeks in March when it picks up a bit during Spring Break) - Late October

Hurricanes
Hurricane season is between the months of June and November and is at its peak in August and September. The occurrence of hurricanes directly hitting Myrtle Beach is infrequent and the last major hurricane was Hugo in 1989.

FISHING

Fishing is allowed without a license on most public piers but many of them require you to purchase a fishing pass. You can also fish without a license from a licensed fishing charter.

If you hope to fish from the shore, a saltwater recreational fishing license is required. The annual license for a SC resident is $10 and $35 for non-residents. A 14-day license is also available. The price for a 14-day license is $5 for residents of SC and $11 for non-residents.

You can purchase a license from Bass Pro Shop at the Myrtle Beach Mall (10177 North Kings Highway) or from one of two Walmart locations (541 Seaboard Street or 10820 North Kings Highway). You can also purchase a fishing license online.

PARKING

Parking meters are located at most areas along Ocean Blvd. The meters remain in effect between March 1 - September 30.

Tip: There are many public beach access lots between the avenues of 38th & 50th North that offer free parking.

*Vehicles with handicapped plates/tags, as well as vehicles with valid Purple Heart, Disabled American Veteran, or Medal of Honor license plates, may park for free at any parking meter, the Pavilion Parking Garage, and/or the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.
